Costumes
Nothing says special occasion like a costume – maybe that's why all love to wear them so much. Playing dress-ups is often seen as something just for kids, but there's no reason why it has to be. And so long as you're having fun and not harming anyone else, well, why shouldn't you wear whatever costume you want to?
Wearing costumes has a long history, going back to the earliest precursors of the modern theatre and circus. Wearing a special outfit has long been recognised as a way to both signal and encourage the importance and specialness of any occasion. Indeed, the line between costume and uniform is a fine one – if you ever want to insult a soldier, a nurse, an athlete, a cop or a priest, refer to their uniform as a costume. Just don't expect them to like it very much. Most professionals feel, and quite rightly, that a uniform is for serious business, and a costume is just for fun.
There are only three types of people who regularly wear costumes. First of all, there are actors and circus performers – and even they only do so for special occasions like performances or parades. In both cases, the costume is worn in order to heighten the experience for the audience, to make it something that really stands out from the day to day.
The third type of people who wear costumes are cosplayers, who dress up for the simple reason that it's fun. Cosplayers often dress up as characters from various movies, books, comics or cartoons, and many of them make their own costumes. Some of these costumes are spectacular to see, and even if you have no idea who that character is, you'll probably still be impressed by the quality of the costume. For some people, playing dress ups is a serious business.
(Well, I suppose superheroes wear costumes too, but I've never seen one of them in real life.)
For the rest of us, the only costumes wear likely to wear are party costumes – fancy dress costumes! A fancy dress party is one of the few times that we can all play dress-ups to our heart's content, and there's a wide array of options, including costumes for every kind of person – women's costumes, men's costumes, kid's costumes, plus size costumes – whatever kind of person you are, there's something that will suit you, and usually lots of somethings.
There are a number of different types of fancy dress costume, depending on the kind of fancy dress party you're going to.
Themed costumes are also very popular, such as Christmas fancy dress costumes and scary costumes for Halloween parties. While Christmas costumes are largely restricted to Santa costumes or elf costumes, scary costumes are much more diverse. Popular types include kinky devil costumes, pirate costumes, nurse costumes and sexy maid costumes, not to mention the inevitable witch costumes. The vast majority of Adult costumes are themed in such a way.
There are a few more options for adult costumes.
Sexy Costumes, which are often modified versions of the uniforms worn by certain professions. They look a lot like the real thing, but they're often more revealing, made from dressier fabrics or in brighter colours. French maid costumes, schoolgirl costumes and nurse costumes, are fairly common, as sexy versions of police and military uniforms.
Erotic costumes are similar to other sexy costumes, but they are generally more exotic, and don't aim to look anything other than damned hot when worn. This can include kinky costumes like fetish wear, or more straightforwardly sexy costumes, such as lingerie costumes. Whatever the nature of the erotic costume in question, they tend to be worn only at the more adult kind of costume party.
