Fishnet Stockings

Although there as many different styles and looks of sexy stockings as there are stars in the night sky, there's always been something special about fishnets.

Maybe it's the holes – like an Aero bar, it's the little bits of nothing that make fishnet stockings really something.  Maybe it's the tightness – fishnets are almost always worn skin tight, formfitting and curve-hugging.  Maybe it's something else  entirely.  It doesn't matter that much – the important thing is that fishnet stockings are damned sexy.  If you know anyone who has a fetish for sexy stockings, nine times out of ten it's specifically fishnet stockings that they fetishise.

By far and away the most common colour of fishnet stockings is black, because fishnets are all about contrast.  However, you can get them in nearly any colour you might wish to – there are even white fishnets for use as  bridal stockings.

Fishnet stockings come in a wide variety of sizes and shapes – while the classic fishnet stocking features diamond shaped holes, that's hardly the only option.  Fishnets also come with circular holes, triangular holes or even hexagonal designs.  (It should be noted though that there's a good reason for the diamond pattern – it's the strongest physically.)

The size of the holes is also quite variable – the smallest ones are so small that you can barely see them (unless you're quite pleasantly close to them), measuring mere millimetres across.  The largest ones can feature holes 5 centimetres or more across – this kind is sometimes called fencenet or whalenet (because a whale is bigger than a fish – get it?).

While it's not compulsory, fishnet stockings are most frequently worn with a garter belt and suspenders – it's a classic look that has aroused generations of men of women (even before the Rocky Horror Show).  But if you don't want to be bothered with the fiddliness of garters, you can also buy fishnet stay-ups and even fishnet pantyhose.  (You can also wear fishnet pantyhose as a top, by poking a hole in the seam at the crotch and sticking your head through that – this works best with toe-less fishnet stockings, so that your hands are still free.)

Not that fishnets are limited to stockings – there are also fishnet body stockings, fishnet tops in various cuts, even fishnet gloves (both with and without fingers).  And they all look very sexy.

Fishnet is also very versatile – you don't have to wear it by itself (although that is most popular way).  Fishnet's open weave makes it great for wearing over something else, creating a contrast that is visually arresting and sexually arousing.  This works particularly well with wearing a pair of fishnet stockings over a pair of colourful sheer stockings, although it can be a little hot for the wearer.

The one downside of fishnets is that they can be fairly fragile.  When something comes with that many holes in it, it's easy to snag it on something, and while the fabric that comprises fishnets has some give, it won't stretch forever.  Likewise, the constant pulling of the garters can cause the fabric to stretch and warp.  Fortunately, fishnets are fairly cheap to replace (at least compared to other lingerie).
